The 2016-17 campaign began brightly for Manchester United. A Community Shield triumph over Leicester City was followed by three consecutive victories in the Premier League. Daley Blind and Eric Bailly were outstanding in central defence during the opening stages of the season, particularly in victories over AFC Bournemouth and Southampton. The duo were able to clear out the opposition’s scoring chances and covered quite a bit of space in their own half, which allowed fullbacks like Marcos Rojo to advance in the attack.

Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini teamed up well in defensive midfield roles, further allowing the United attack to flourish. Along with David De Gea in goal, the Red Devils had the perfect foundation at the back to allow forward progress. Paul Pogba is most comfortable in an advanced role, as his performances with France at Euro 2016 displayed. With the defensive midfield covered, Pogba’s talents can truly shine.
A home loss to Manchester City in September began to undo United’s form, but the capabilities for success are present. There is a sense that the quality is there, but recent results have damaged confidence. A good string of match results can help to offset this intangible.
An initial stumble against Feyenoord in the UEFA Europa League was quickly addressed also, as United and Mourinho won their next two group matches in the competition.
