There are many great managers who move to different clubs in different countries around Europe and have difficulty replicating success. Jose Mourinho is not one of those managers.
Each of his stops has brought domestic silverware in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. Two Champions League titles mixed in with Porto and Inter Milan make this return even more impressive. Critics will point to the fact that he has often had star-studded squads that were expected to be champions.
His Chelsea and Real Madrid sides may fall into that category, but much of his success with Porto and Inter Milan came from his leadership, player management and tactics. A great team will still need solid guidance to achieve their objectives, and Mourinho’s ability to manage the best footballers in the world will ultimately benefit Manchester United.
The manager position of Manchester United is a unique position in not only football, but in world sports. The club has a massive global following and is a unique brand. United shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the pressure that comes with it can be much to handle for anyone involved.
While Premier League struggles are tough to deal with due to the massive expectations that come with Manchester United, Mourinho’s resume points toward future success.
