FC Dallas: Three hopes, one fear
By Sean Maslin
Hope #2: That Matt Hedges can continue to be Captain Clutch
When FC Dallas have needed a strong defensive stand they have called upon Captain Clutch, Matt Hedges. At just 26 years old Hedges has developed into one of the best center-backs in Major League Soccer. The reason for this is simple: his play never wavers and he is always able to bail out his teammates. On Sunday, Hedges did it again making two goal-line clears to keep the Sounders at bay and to keep the series alive at 3-0.

Aside from his flair for the dramatic it is his pitch awareness that makes Hedges such an exceptional talent. As opposed to other center-backs in the league Hedges always seems acutely aware of where he is on the pitch and more than comfortable getting players to shift into different positions.
Not all center-backs at the age of 26 have a.) the confidence and b.) the respect of their peers to actually accomplish such a task. But Hedges has such a rapport with his line mates that is possible. It is also precisely the same reason why FC Dallas supporters are so vexed as to why he has not received many call-ups to the USMNT.
Dallas’ defense are going to face a tall task on Sunday at home against the Sounders. Thankfully they have the right type of center-back to hold the line as their attack goes to work.
