Historical records

In the simplest possible historical terms, Arsenal coming out on top is the expected result. Across all competitions, the Gunners hold a record of 78-50-55 against Tottenham. But there are other interesting areas that point to this being a big day for Arsenal supporters around the globe.

Since Arsene Wenger took over as manager in 1996, Arsenal have never gone five consecutive North London derbies without a win. After three draws and a loss in the last four encounters, all signs point to the Gunners continuing their fine current form on Sunday.

On the other end of the sideline, Mauricio Pochettino has begun his North London derby career quite successfully. Spurs have not lost a Premier League match against their city neighbours under his watch. But, similar to the previous statistic, no Tottenham manager has been able to go unbeaten in their first five league encounters with Arsenal.

The match comes at the worst possible time for Tottenham, while arriving at seemingly the perfect time for Arsenal. Arsenal players at the top of their game and Tottenham’s injury list growing with each day have set up an unenviable task for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino at the Emirates on Sunday.

The North London derby’s all-time leading scorer is Emmanuel Adebayor, who played for both clubs and scored ten goals in the series. In honour of one of his famous moments at the expense of Arsenal, the football world will be running at top speed towards the stadium and towards the televisions at high noon for kick-off of Sunday’s match.

What they will find is Arsenal staying at the top of the Premier League standings with a victory over Tottenham, and continuing to battle with Manchester City and Liverpool for first place.
