Granit Xhaka

Arsenal supporters want to see a proactive approach to the transfer market. Whether that is what they see is a different matter altogether, but the crown jewel of 2016’s summer came in the form of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka. The Swiss international is one of the most expensive transfers in Arsenal’s history.

At only 24 years old, Xhaka made a major impact on the Bundesliga with his mercurial talents in a defensive midfield role. He has excellent vision on the pitch and possesses a remarkable ability to see the opposition’s next move, constantly making interceptions and key tackles.

Often compared to German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, Wenger knew that the addition of a player like Xhaka would have positive effects on the club in various areas. Coverage in the midfield immediately improves and allows for attacking players like Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to get forward at will. On top of this advantage, Xhaka’s own ability to create scoring chances is a helpful attribute.

The former FC Basel youth product also brings plenty of international football experience as well, having been a part of Switzerland’s squad in both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and at Euro 2016.
Xhaka began the campaign slowly and has only started four Premier League matches, but he has been coming on as of late.

Two goals across all competitions and providing quality service to the attack with his accurate passing, Granit Xhaka’s play for Arsenal will continue to evolve in 2016-17 and beyond.
