5. Wimmer is ahead of CCV

For months, Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that young Cameron Carter-Vickers was ahead of Kevin Wimmer in the Tottenham depth chart. Evidently, that’s no longer the case.

If it were, then surely Carter-Vickers would have gotten the starting nod ahead of Wimmer in the back three. Deploying the young American with two other senior centre backs would have been an easier way to insert him into the lineup than just partnering with one other central defender.

I certainly am not surprised at this revelation. Wimmer looked good last year in relief of Jan Vertonghen when the Belgian was out injured. The idea that such an inexperienced player had sprinted past him in Pochettino’s pecking order was a little hard to believe.

It’s pretty obvious those words were designed to motivate Wimmer to improve his form. I’m not sure he did that today (especially in the first half) but it was probably a step in the right direction for the Austrian centre back.
