Godin’s Atletico and Uruguay teammate Jose Gimenez is also reported to be on Jose Mourinho’s radar. If they end up selling Chris Smalling, Phil Jones or Marcos Rojo, United could sign Gimenez to replace them.

Jose Gimenez is one of Europe’s top young centre-backs and is sought by many big clubs including United, Arsenal, and Chelsea. The 21-year-old won’t come cheap either. He has a £50m price tag which could deter United and make them look elsewhere.

Gimenez ousted Miranda from the Atletico line-up in 2015-16, and he also took Diego Lugano’s place in the Uruguay line-up. Yet there remain doubts over his temperament. However, he is an imposing figure, and is also very quick. He has all the potential to thrive in the physical English game.

Manchester United fans would welcome the Uruguayan duo of Gimenez and Godin, who could well become the new Vidic and Ferdinand at Old Trafford.
