4. Marcos Rojo

The Argentinian defender has started United’s past 4 games, mainly due to the injuries sustained by Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, who have been Mourinho’s first choice pairing for much of the season. However, as much as it was forced, Rojo was brought back into the fold and has performed considerably well since his recall.

Regardless, a future over a long-term remains cloudy – especially when the defenders are fit again. Bailly, 22, returns to full fitness before heading to the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. That may give Rojo a lifeline until the summer at least. The unreliable injury prone Phil Jones is back, and if he can string together a few good games would be likely preferred over the former Sporting Lisbon man alongside Smalling.

The general consensus is that Rojo is just too hasty to be considered a reliable option for the Red Devils. Almost two years later, and he still doesn’t have a fixated position between playing as a cover left back or a centre back at different times. It doesn’t help his progress in that sense as the positions require to very different requirements and carry different responsibilities.

If United do get another centre back in the summer, it will be curtains for Rojo’s career as a red. It won’t be anyone else’s. That is for sure.
