4. Eric Dier

Last season, Dier would have appeared much higher on this list. Unfortunately, his mediocre play during the 2016-17 season has significantly dulled the physical midfielder’s reputation.

In all honesty, he’s been thoroughly outplayed by Victor Wanyama. The only reason Dier is a regular starter at the moment is because of Toby Alderweireld’s injury absence. That’s a serious decline from where he stood in last season’s pecking order.

Even though he’s having a down season, it’s not hard to imagine him bouncing back quickly. When he’s fit and firing, he can be a dynamic presence in the middle of the pitch. He isn’t afraid to put a physical challenge in or back up his teammates if a conflict arises.

We’ve also seen evidence that Dier isn’t afraid to yell at a teammate on the pitch. That’s something good captains have to do from time to time. If Dier’s form gets back on track, he could certainly be Tottenham’s next captain.
