5. Struggling Competition

Spanish teams are expected to be in the hunt for the Champions League come May, as well as Bayern Munich, but beyond that teams are offered little chance of a genuine challenge.

The likes of Paris St-Germain and Juventus will hope to cause problems this year, while Guardiola’s presence at City shows they mean business, but without doubt Barcelona remain the strongest team in Europe.

Many claimed Real Madrid were lucky to lift the trophy under Zinedine Zidane last season, and they are showing real shortcomings this term, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo not firing on all cylinders. Bayern, meanwhile, look more beatable than they have in years despite leading the Bundesliga under Carlo Ancelotti.

It will take time for Guardiola to really implement his ideas at the Etihad Stadium, while Unai Emery is yet to find his feet at PSG.

Diego Simeone’s Atleti could prove to be a nemesis once again, but Barcelona have won this competition in years when their rivals have proved a lot stronger than they are now. They will certainly fancy their chances.
