Real Madrid continue to be linked with Aaron Ramsey
A club like Real Madrid have the fame and wealth to chase the world’s brightest football stars. Yet, for some reason, the La Liga giants continue to prominently mentioned with Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
Officials in Madrid reportedly believe that a £25 million offer and the promise of £90 thousand per week in wages will be enough to tempt Ramsey to make the move. One has to imagine that Arsenal would be reasonably satisfied with that fee, and that’s certainly a reasonable wage offer for a player of Ramsey’s ability. I still can’t see where the move makes a ton of sense from the Real Madrid perspective though.
It’s not that Ramsey isn’t a good footballer. When he’s fit, he’s a solidly above average Premier League midfielder. He’s certainly someone who Arsene Wenger would miss. The trouble is, he hasn’t been the model of fitness throughout his career. He’s a reasonable bet to miss time every year due to injury.
Even when he is fit, I’m not sure he’s good enough to move the needle for Real Madrid. They are a team that are only satisfied when achieving Champions League glory. Ramsey just isn’t a dynamic enough presence to really help them achieve that goal. He could be a reasonable squad member for Los Blancos, but would be hard pressed to hold down a regular place in their starting XI.
The one upside I do see for Real Madrid is that purchasing Ramsey would help Gareth Bale. The former Tottenham star is the club’s most important attacker of the future, and happens to play for the same country as Ramsey. The two clearly enjoy playing with one another for Wales and could conceivably replicate that form for Real Madrid.
£25 million might be a small price to pay for making sure Bale feels comfortable at the club. Throughout his tenure in Spain there have been whispers that he feels a bit like a fish out of water in the Spanish capital. Those rumors have never been confirmed by anyone at the club or in the player’s camp, but they persist nonetheless. Perhaps acquiring another Welsh player could put those reports to bed for good.

There’s also the slight matter of Real Madrid’s impending transfer ban. Theoretically they wouldn’t be free to sign Ramsey until the summer of 2018. It’s worth noting that officials with the club seem confident they will win their appeal and be freed of such transfer shackles.
Rumors connecting Aaron Ramsey with Real Madrid just won’t die. Evidently, the world-class Spanish club see something in the Welshman that many Premier League observers cannot.
