4. Marco Verratti

Luka Modric and Toni Kroos have become mainstays in midfield at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years, with Brazilian Casemiro also carving out a key role for himself.

Taking that into account, chasing another player in a similar mould may seem futile. But with Modric not getting any younger, it would be sensible for the club to begin looking towards the future. Who better to go for than the man predicted as the heir to the legendary Andrea Pirlo’s throne at the pinnacle of Italian football?

Marco Verratti once showed huge amounts of potential when with calcio minnows Pescara in Serie B. It didn’t take long for the precocious young talent to attract interest, and he became one of mega-rich Paris Saint-Germain’s first signings of 2012.

Now 24, Verratti has only gone from strength to strength in the French capital, winning the league title every season he’s been there. Moving to Paris was not obvious at the time, but the presence of Italian Carlo Ancelotti helped him a lot.

The coach would make the switch to Real Madrid a year later, and Verratti, who could begin to outgrow his current surroundings, would be making a good decision if he followed those footsteps.

From the club’s point of view, the Italy player can dictate the pace of a game as well as anyone. He is still a while away from reaching his peak, so now is the perfect time to swoop.
