Joe Gomez made a strong start to his Liverpool career before his injury

13. Joe Gomez

Gomez graduated through the academy at League One club Charlton Athletic. He made his debut for the Addicks aged 17. The defender who can play both at both centre-back and right-back went on to make 21 appearances for the club before Liverpool came calling.

He signed for the Reds in 2015 for a fee of £3.5 million on a five-year deal. Gomez played 5 games for Liverpool before he suffered a season ending anterior cruciate ligament injury in October 2015. He returned to training a year later in October 2016. He stepped up his recovery further by playing the full 90 minutes for the Liverpool U23s team in November.

Gomez is likely to play a few more games for the U23s before stepping up to the first team. Liverpool have high hopes from Gomez, and the highly rated youngster has all the traits to become a proper defender. Gomez has already played for the England U16, U17, U19 and U21 teams, and a senior team call-up could beckon in the future.

Gomez is versatile, athletic and plays with great composure. Aged 19, Gomez still has alot of time on his side. He can be the answer to Liverpool’s defensive problems for years to come, provided he can successfully get past that gruesome injury he suffered from a year ago.
