5. The Mkhitaryan affair

It’s easy to forget that Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic weren’t the only high-priced players United purchased this summer. Henrikh Mkhitaryan came over from Borussia Dortmund with the expectation that he’d slot immediately into Mourinho’s starting XI.

Instead, the Armenian international has only managed five Premier League appearances to date. Only one of those was a start. He hasn’t registered a goal or an assist for his new club. His Whoscored.com player rating average of 6.45 is well below the Premier League average.

At best, Mkhitaryan has failed to live up to expectations. At worst, he’s been a giant transfer flop. There’s still time for him to recover and prove his worth, but the clock is certainly ticking. The blame for his struggles lies largely with Mourinho.

Mkhitaryan isn’t entirely innocent, but his manager has handled him horrendously. He’s failed to show any confidence in the talented offensive star. Instead of supporting him, he’s openly questioned him in the media on numerous occasions.

It’s no wonder Mkhitaryan isn’t off to a flying start in England. It’s just one reason that Mourinho should get the axe at the earliest opportunity.
