4. Rashford’s regression

Manchester United fans thought they had their striker of the future when Marcus Rashford exploded onto the scene last season. He was a rare bright spot in the last days of Louis van Gaal. Unfortunately, he hasn’t continued his momentum since Mourinho’s arrival.

The Special One is (in)famous for his lack of ability or willingness to bring young players through to the first team. Instead his strong preference is to rely on veterans.

To that end, he brought Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Old Trafford this summer. His arrival was met with a ton of fanfare, pomp and circumstance. Unfortunately, it also brought Rashford’s meteoric rise to a halt.

Rashford has managed three goals in 10 Premier League appearances this year, but he hasn’t been able to hold down a consistent spot in Mourinho’s starting XI. His Whoscored.com player rating of just 6.51 is only good for 19th place in the squad. That isn’t close to the expectations United fans had for their young striker coming into the year.

It’s not as if Mourinho has murdered Rashford’s career, but he’s certainly set it back several months already. If he remains in charge, there’s no telling how bad things might get for the English starlet.
