Centre Back – Gerard Pique, Barcelona

Barcelona’s first entrant is Gerard Pique who, despite a lot of things being said about him throughout his career, is one of the best defenders in the world and has been for many years.

At times he has made mistakes and shown inconsistency but the Spain international, who is not very popular with the Real Madrid fans for various reasons, has been a constant in Barça’s most successful era in recent memory.

His move back to the Camp Nou from Manchester United in 2008 proved a masterstroke from a personal point of view. Despite being highly rated by Sir Alex Ferguson, his age, doubts over his ability to adapt to the Premier League and the presence of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the club nullified first team opportunities.

He has grown into a leader for his hometown club both on and off the pitch over the years and has the intelligence, both as a soccer player and in general, to play a key role in Catalonia for years after he calls it a day.
