We are talking, of course about soccer, otherwise this would be a very different article.

However, over the years ‘battles’ in European competition between Scottish clubs and their English counterparts have been feisty and intense affairs well worthy of the moniker.

It’s hard to imagine as Manchester City approach their UEFA Champions League return match against Celtic that Scottish sides used to punch above their weight against English opposition.

For various reasons Scottish football has fallen on hard times in recent years, from the decline of Rangers to the drain of talent to much more lucrative English divisions – and not just the Premier League.

Historically Dundee, Dundee United, Rangers and Hibernian have all reached the semi-finals of the European Cup.

To paraphrase a famous anthem, those days are passed now and in the past they must remain.

Yet on the evidence of history it would be unwise to assume an outcome on Tuesday purely based on financial might.

Pep Guardiola’s side are heavy favourites as they were when the two sides met at Celtic Park despite that pulsating match ending in a 3-3 draw.

Yet, as we countdown the 5 Greatest Battles of Britain, it will become apparent why you can go ahead and take that form book and toss it out the window.
