3. Toby Alderweireld’s return augurs well for Spurs

The Champions League fixture against CSKA also saw the return of Toby Alderweireld for Spurs. The Belgian defender made a cameo at the Wembley, after being out since October due to a knee injury. Tottenham managed to win just two games during Alderweireld’s 10-game absence across all competitions, highlighting his importance to Pochettino’s side.

In the absence of Alderweireld, Pochettino has had to rely upon Kevin Wimmer and has also called upon Eric Dier to fill in at the heart of the defence. The Austrian however, has looked very shaky at the back and has been inconsistent at best. Eric Dier also has looked suspect playing at centre-back and looks much more comfortable playing in the midfield.

Tottenham have conceded 6 goals during the Belgian’s absence out of the 10 they have let in during Premier League action thus far. So, the return of Alderweireld to fitness will come as a huge boost to Pochettino’s side.
