3. He would offer tactical versatility

It has already been established that Kimmich is positionally versatile, but he would also allow more freedom to Luis Enrique, something he could use at times.

Kimmich is solid in midfield, similar to Busquets, but would not offer the same tempo dictation as the Spaniard, while he couldn’t impact the game in a more advanced position like Iniesta. What he would bring is elegance and drive to the centre of the park, perhaps excelling in the role both Andre Gomes and Arda Turan have stalled in so far.

From a defensive point of view, despite being able to play there, he isn’t renowned for it. He, like a lot of the players at Barcelona and also now at Manchester City, is an example of just why Guardiola is the world’s best coach. Pep takes players, regardless of preferred position, and plays them where they thrive in a different role.

If Kimmich played at right-back, for example, he would not offer the same presence as Dani Alves once did, but he would create the perfect link into midfield, allowing Iniesta and Messi, who usually plays on the right of attack, to thrive.

At centre back, he would allow the fullbacks to push forward because his positional sense and spacial awareness, again like Busquets, would not allow room for counter attacks. While not renowned for his pace, Kimmich is not slow and is unlikely to be caught out anywhere on the pitch.
