A crowded midfield

Manchester United and Jose Mourinho will want to see more from their attack, so the pursuit of a player like Dimitri Payet makes sense. But with so many options already at the position, the addition of Payet would not have the impact that the club expects.

Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata occupy the United midfield often and have excellent attacking attributes. Players like Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford can occupy wide positions that can open up the opposing defence.

Wayne Rooney’s place in the team demands attention for United management as well.

On top of this part of the formation, defensive midfield has plenty of depth also. The addition of Payet will only create a logjam at the position and within the United line-up.

Mourinho’s side may want to focus more on the backline and defensive assistance in the January transfer window as they look to improve their league form and prepare for the EFL Cup semi-finals against Hull City.
