Mike Phelan – Hull City

Mike Phelan is in an unenviable position. He was appointed Hull’s caretaker manager following the sudden departure of Steve Bruce last July. Bruce had become frustrated at the newly promoted sides’ lack of new signings.

Phelan was officially named manager in October after leading the Tigers to a successful start. This included an opening day victory over current champions Leicester City.

Hull began the season with one of the smallest squads in the entire league. The club literally started the new campaign with just 14 senior players.

Hull’s early fortunes didn’t last long as reality has since caught up with the team. They are currently 19th in the table with just eleven points after 14 league matches.

Phelan is planning on actively seeking new players during the January transfer window.

Hull City fans are angry but their wrath is directed at owner Assem Allam. The fans realize that Phelan was put in a tough situation and is doing the best he can with what he’s been given to work with.

Unfortunately the owner of a team cannot be fired. Therefore Phelan may be the sacrificial lamb should Hull’s season continue on a downward spiral.
