Hosting the second leg

The knockout rounds of the Champions League can create unique situations. The two-leg series and away-goals tiebreaker make every moment count.

For Arsenal, it is the first time in a long time that they will be able to host the second leg.

Clubs are paired by a group stage winner playing a group runner-up. The second place side hosts the first leg and the deciding match is played at the home grounds of the group winner.

After five consecutive seasons finishing runners-up in their Champions League group, Arsenal will have that advantage against Bayern in 2017.

The Gunners will be able to utilise a patient and possession-based approach when they visit the Allianz Arena in February. Finding an away goal will be critical, but there will not be as much pressure on Arsenal.

Wenger’s side will know exactly where they stand and what they will need in terms of a result at home to reach the quarter-final stage. Needing to score as the visiting side can often be difficult, especially against a quality club like Bayern.

Arsenal have experienced many ups and downs already in the 2016-17 season, with much work to do in order to climb the Premier League table. For their Champions League dates with Bayern Munich in 2017, the Gunners will be ready to extract a measure of revenge with a strong performance over two legs.
