Phantom penalties awarded at Stoke

Earlier this season Mike Dean caused Twitter to erupt in anger following his performance during the Stoke versus Manchester City match

In the first half Dean awarded a penalty to City after deciding that Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross had caused Nicolas Otamendi to tumble over after pulling his shirt sleeve. It was a harsh call, but it allowed Sergio Aguero to step up and score from the spot.

Maybe he realized he had messed up, but Dean made a similar call in the second half. This time City’s Raheem Sterling was the perpetrator and Shawcross the victim.

City went on to win the match but Dean was unable to escape the criticism.
