Mike Dean demoted from the Premier League to the Championship

Back in 2010 Dean was demoted to the Championship following a sub par display during Chelsea’s 1-2 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

A goal by Didier Drogba was allowed to stand despite it being painfully obvious that the player was offside.

Other mistakes included Dean not awarding penalties to United when Park Ji-sung was tripped by Chelsea’s Uri Zhirkov or to Chelsea when Gary Neville collided with Nicolas Anelka.

Then there’s the fact that Dean somehow didn’t see United teenager Federico Macheda score with the use of his hands. He allowed the goal to stand.

After the loss to Chelsea, Ferguson said:

"What I can’t understand is that the assistant referee was directly in front of him [Drogba] for the second goal and there is no player near him. In a game of this magnitude you need quality officiating. We didn’t get that today, I’m afraid. It was a poor, poor performance."

He later admitted that upon learning prior to the game that Dean would be the match referee that he was concerned, “When I saw it was Mike Dean I did worry, I have to say.”
