Is a two striker formation the fix that Arsenal needs to surge to the top of the table?

Despite playing beautiful passing football, Arsenal struggle at times to put the ball in the back of the net. With the quality of players they have, this should not be an issue. A change in their formation could be the key to a new style of offense.

Arsenal traditionally play a 4231, with the wide players supporting the striker up top.  The striker up top this season for Arsenal has been a toss-up. Sanchez, Giroud, Perez and even Walcott have all played as the man leading the lines for Arsenal. With Welbeck and even Iwobi available to play striker if needed, Arsenal have plenty of options for this tactic to work.

Switching to a two striker formation means Arsenal would be losing one midfielder. A 41212 would suit them well in this situation, as it would still allow a holding mid and attacking mid to be fielded. There are a few options for each position with plenty of talent to go around.

Ozil would more than likely occupy the central attacking role. If he was injured, a player like Ramsey or Cazorla, when fit, could slot into that area. All three players are more than capable of picking a pass and are deadly going forward.

The central defenders role could be filled by a number of players. Elneny, Xhaka, Coquelin and Ramsey could play the deep role in a 41212.  Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sanchez, Walcott and Iwobi can all play on the wings of the formation. They can provide width as well as service for Giroud and Perez in the box.

Giroud and Perez have already proven what a good partnership up top they can be. Perez was brought on when Arsenal was losing 3-0 to Bournemouth. Perez then scored one of the three goals in a comeback and Giroud added two assists.

In the FA Cup, Perez and Giroud linked up for the game winning goal in the 89th minute. They are in great form, and having them both on the field will be a massive boost for Arsenal in terms of goal scoring threats.

Arsene Wenger is a man who is very set in his ways, so changing the formation could be just a fantasy. However, changing to a two striker formation would really highlight the attacking power Arsenal has. They will still be able to field their strongest players and will have a plethora of options off the bench if they need to change their tactics.
