Steven N’Zonzi

One of the most important elements to Sevilla’s success this season has been the spectacular play of midfielder Steven N’Zonzi. He has been at the heart of Sampaoli’s formation and has had a positive impact in seemingly every match.

The French international arrived in Spain in July of 2015 and struggled initially. Adapting to a new league and a new environment is never easy. But N’Zonzi began to round into form as the season went on, and the former Stoke City midfielder has truly flourished under his new manager.

Operating in front of the back-line, the 28-year old’s ability to control an encounter from a holding position has been sublime. N’Zonzi’s passing has been accurate and his positioning has been exceptional. Clearing out scoring opportunities at one end of the pitch and transitioning forward has been possible thanks to N’Zonzi’s work rate.

His impact is reminiscent of N’Golo Kante for Leicester City last season on the way to their miraculous Premier League championship.

A goal and three assists across all competitions only begins to tell part of the tale, as others at Sevilla have been able to shine thanks to N’Zonzi in his defensive midfield role.

Sevilla’s defence and midfield have improved from last season and allows their attack to be productive in the opposing half of the pitch. If Sevilla are to best Barcelona this season, Steven N’Zonzi’s play will dictate much of the results.
