Newcastle United – April 2005

Fury. Passion. Intensity. Skill. Talent.

Just some of the words that come to mind in describing Wayne Rooney’s sensational volley against Newcastle United in 2005. The spirit and atmosphere at Old Trafford that day changed dramatically with one superb moment.

Newcastle had frustrated the home side, and held a 1-0 advantage in the second half. This was until the 57th minute, when an angry Wayne Rooney took full control. Booked for a tackle only moments earlier, the striker had choice words for the referee as he made his way towards the opposing goal.

A clearance fell to Rooney about 30 yards out and he sent a scintillating shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. Excitement from supporters followed, but there was a slight hush as well.

The blast and Rooney’s demeanor was that of a man who was there to make a statement.
United went on to win the match 2-1.
