Manchester City – February 2011

An acrobatic goal to defeat Manchester City in an important match on your way to a league title? Rooney’s strike against City during the 2010-11 season was a very special moment for Manchester United and Premier League viewers overall.

With the match 1-1 going into the final minutes, Nani lobbed a cross into the penalty area. While Rooney was able to create space for the shot, Nani’s effort had a difficult element to it.

Rooney seemed prepared for the volley, but the pass curved just before arriving. Displaying his impressive instincts and quick reaction, Rooney turned, jumped and put the ball past goalkeeper Joe Hart with a brilliant overhead kick.

Rooney didn’t hit it perfectly, but instead effectively. An iconic goal was followed by an iconic celebration, as he sprinted towards the corner flag and threw his arms out in the air.
