Stoke City – January 2017

It is certainly easy to look upon Wayne Rooney’s most recent goal with praise, with it being the strike that broke the club’s scoring record. But along with that fact, his free-kick effort last Saturday against Stoke City was tremendous.

The home side were not making matters easy on United, and the Potters appeared set to earn three points on the evening. But Rooney’s incredible stoppage-time goal rescued a point for manager Jose Mourinho’s side.

Displaying a wonderful and skillful touch on the ball, Rooney’s right-footed blast was hit with pace and placed perfectly to beat Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant. Sending a strong ripple through the side netting and at an exceptional height, it was certainly a special moment.

Known for his power and pace, the goal was an excellent reminder of Rooney’s quality on the ball in free-kick situations.

It is Rooney’s 250th goal for the club, and has been shown often this week. But this strike moved him past Sir Bobby Charlton and also earned an important point for Manchester United.
