Wayne Rooney’s English national team career was meteoric, as the 19-year old truly announced himself on the world stage at Euro 2004. His group stage performances were absolutely mesmerising, although the tournament did not end as he or the Three Lions would have hoped.

England met Portugal in the quarter-finals, where Rooney suffered an injury and his squad were eliminated on penalties. But the magic of Rooney’s four tournament goals lives on, as his unstoppable pace and determination left a strong impression on every viewer.
It can be difficult to narrow on one, as each goal had excellent quality. The match against Switzerland featured a strong header and even stronger blast for his second goal. A similar one followed for his first in the final group match against Croatia.
But it was his final goal that truly stood out, as many of his best attributes were shown in an incredible sequence.

A slick passing combination at the centre circle sprung Rooney towards goal and he slotted home his second of the night in 4-2 victory. Had it not been for his injury, Euro 2004 could have been even more special for both Wayne Rooney and England.
