Portsmouth – January 2007

Few types of goals are remembered as fondly as well-timed chips over a goalkeeper, and Rooney’s superb second goal in a 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round victory over Portsmouth was a special moment for the Manchester United star.

Coming on as a second-half substitute, Rooney entered a tense and physical match. Pompey were a strong side, and United had difficulty breaking down their defence.

Rooney’s first gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead, with his moment of magic soon to follow.

After a wonderful exhibition of possession and passing from manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, Rooney took the ball from about 25 yards out. Just before reaching the penalty area, he spotted the goalkeeper off his line and sent a soaring chip into the back of the net.

United would go on to the FA Cup final that season, losing to Chelsea 1-0 in extra-time. But Rooney’s magnificent effort will always be talked about amongst supporters and fans.
