Arsene Wenger may leave Arsenal this summer

Arsenal fans need to be careful what they wish for. In the case of manager Arsene Wenger, they might just get it. It’s becoming more and more likely that the French manager will leave the Premier League club this summer.

Reports from England claim that Wenger is growing tired of the constant abuse from a large portion of the Gunners’ faithful. The general consensus among a very vocal portion of the Arsenal fan base is that the club have gone as far as they can under Wenger. Many would like to see Wenger move on this summer.

In some ways, I can understand their frustration. Arsenal have managed to stay in the Premier League’s upper-echelon for an extended period of time, but can’t manage to break through for a title. Some fans point to Wenger’s conservative financial policies as the culprit for that failure. Time after time, Arsenal fans have been forced to watch their favourite players move to other EPL clubs for improved wages.

That isn’t really the issue as of late though. The club splashed major cash to bring the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to North London. Wenger’s supposed problems now lie on the actual field of play. Critics believe the game has passed him by in some ways. At any rate, many don’t see Wenger as the right man to help Arsenal break through for a title.

While that might be true, many of the club’s most passionate fans are ignoring what he does provide on an annual basis. Under Wenger, Arsenal are assured of qualifying for Champions League play via an attractive brand of football. Quite a few other Premier League fan bases would kill for that sort of consistent excellence.

Ultimately, the question of whether or not Wenger should be retained comes down to who you believe is a realistic replacement. If you think Arsenal can pry someone like Diego Simeone away from Atletico Madrid, by all means make a change. If instead, you think his successor will be someone more like Eddie Howe, you’d be better off persisting with the Frenchman.

The Arsene Wenger era at Arsenal may actually come to an end this summer. It may bring temporary relief to a frustrated fan base, but it’s unlikely to cure the ills that ail the Gunners in the long run.
