Five reasons Claudio Ranieri needs to stay on at Leicester City
By Liam Price
Premier League Title
Leicester City was the Cinderella story that was reported across the globe. Literally. I had colleagues who know very little about the game (sorry if you are reading this) ask me: “so what’s with this Leicester team?”
After 10 seasons away from top-flight, Leicester was promoted to the Premier League in 2014. After a dull first-season in the competition, Ranieri was brought onboard to make changes. He did just that, bringing in players like Christian Fuchs, Robert Huth, N’Golo Kante and Demarai Gray to bolster the squad.
Claudio Ranieri, also known as the Tinkerman, took a group of under-rated and relatively unheard of players to the heights of the Premier League last season. From the touchline, he asked his players to be relentless, play with heart and never give up. In return, they gave him one of the ultimate honors in the game… the Premier League trophy. Ranieri also received the prestigious honor of being named “The Best FIFA Men’s Coach” in 2016, beating out the likes of Euro 2016 winner Fernando Santos and Champions Cup winner Zinedine Zidane.
Position | Team | Pld | W | D | L |
1 | Leicester City (C) | 38 | 23 | 12 | 3 |
2 | Arsenal | 38 | 20 | 11 | 7 |
3 | Tottenham Hotspur | 38 | 19 | 13 | 6 |
4 | Manchester City | 38 | 19 | 9 | 10 |
The fact that Claudio Ranieri took Leicester City to the top of the Premier League table only one season after being promoted would be well in itself, but he managed to keep them at the top. During this incredible season, he outsmarted some of the squads and managers in the game and only faced defeat three times out of 38 games. Yes, they have struggled this season and that is something relatively new to these players. Let’s not forget though, this was always supposed to be a mid-table team.
