Success in Europe

In their inaugural season of the Champions League, Ranieri’s Leicester City squad perhaps got one of the easier draws. Leicester were the English Champions of Group G and pulled along Porto (Portugal), Club Brugge (Belgium) and FC København (Denmark).

Kicking off their Champions League campaign, they showed Europe why they deserved to be in the competition with a 3-0 victory over Brugge in Belgium. They continued their winning ways with back-to-back 1-0 victories against Porto and København. It wasn’t until their fifth match in the competition before they had an opponent put the ball into the back of their net. This didn’t stop them as they went on to defeat the Belgian club 2-1.

Leicester advanced from the top of their group with a record of three wins, one loss and one draw, a very respectable record for their first season in the Champions League. In the first-knockout round, they will face a tough opponent as they play Sevilla away. Sevilla, a back-to-back-to-back Europa Cup Champions, yes that is a three-peat Championship in the competition drew against Leicester after emerging second from Group H.

Ranieri has been favoring the European competition over the domestic league and barring another incredible accomplishment, will not be featuring in the competition next season. If his squad can defeat the tough Spanish opposition, they may have something to celebrate and exit the competition with their heads held high.
