Liverpool are eyeing Demarai Gray

It’s pretty clear that things are going well for Liverpool at the moment. Jurgen Klopp believes his lack of wide options is at least partially responsible for their struggles. The Reds are looking to steal Demarai Gray away from Leicester City as a partial solution for their lack of width.

The Daily Mail reports that Klopp is in the market for not one, but two talented wingers this summer. The most well-known target if Bayer Leverkusen starlet Julian Brandt. Liverpool wanted to sign him to a deal in January, but Leverkusen were unwilling to make a deal. Klopp plans to return for the young German star this summer.

Evidently, he wants to play Brandt on one side of the pitch with Gray on the opposite flank. Gray, like most of his Leicester City teammates, has had a pretty uneven season. He’s only managed to score one goal in 18 Premier League appearances. In fairness, thirteen of his appearances have come off Claudio Ranieri’s bench.

Gray’s talent is too obvious to miss though. He has an amazing combination of blistering pace and skill on the ball that can befuddle opposing defenders. It’s easy to see why Klopp would be interested in such a prodigious young talent.

He also happens to be a better stylistic fit at Liverpool than Leicester City. With the Foxes, Gray is relegated to waiting around to hit opponents on the counter. If he makes the move to Anfield, he’ll get an opportunity to play for a side with significantly more possession. That can only help his skills grow and develop.

The challenge for Liverpool is that, provided Leicester are able to avoid relegation, it’s unlikely the Foxes are going to be in any mood to part with Gray. Selling high-end young talent is hardly a recipe for Premier League success. It’s much more likely that Ranieri’s squad would part with Riyad Mahrez this summer. He would fetch a superior transfer fee and would open up playing time for Gray.
