Portsmouth – January 2008

The football world had already seen plenty of impressive free-kicks from Cristiano Ronaldo leading up to a January Premier League fixture against Portsmouth during the 2007-08 season. As Ronaldo prepared to take the shot, 30 yards out and receiving last-minute instructions from Wayne Rooney, many at Old Trafford expected a goal.

But the shot that Ronaldo took that chilly night was something different altogether.

Bursting with aggression, passion and fury, CR7 sent a missile into the right side of the net that launched supporters into celebration and left Pompey goalkeeper David James completely lost.

Cristiano Ronaldo combines pace and skill on the ball at a level that most clubs are simply unable to keep up with. One of the best of his generation, his abilities are comparable to many of the all-time greats of the game.

But his goal against Portsmouth was unique in that the shot displayed one particular quality above the others, which was power. Pure strength that helped bring United a 2-0 victory on the evening.
