Patrick Vieira scores the winning penalty as Arsenal defeat Manchester United
One of the fiercest rivalries in the late 90’s and the first decade of the new Millenium was Manchester United versus Arsenal. The two teams were the heavyweights of the league and in 2005 they faced off in the FA Cup Final.
Arsenal were holders of the cup having clinched the double in 2004.
Manchester United dominated the bulk of the play but were unable to score. The match then went to added time. After another 30 minutes the two teams remained deadlocked at 0-0.
A penalty shoot out would determine the winner of the trophy.
Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann saved a shot from Paul Scholes. Meanwhile Arsenal’s first four penalties were good. Patrick Vieira stepped to the line knowing a score would secure the trophy. Vieira scored and the Gunners retained the FA Cup.
It was the first FA Cup Final to be decided by penalties.
