Arsenal win the Premier League and FA Cup in the 1997-1998 season

1997-1998 was Arsene Wenger’s first full season in charge of Arsenal. He answered all the critics who had questioned his hiring in October 1996 by winning the league as well as the FA Cup. The last time the Gunners had won a domestic double was back in 1971.

The title seemed out of reach for Wenger’s side when they were sixth in the table at Christmas. In February Arsenal trailed Manchester United by 12 points. The team then went on a nine game winning streak and were declared champions in May following a 4-0 defeat of Everton.

The double was completed when Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the FA Cup Final.

Wenger was named Premier League Manager of the Season and striker Dennis Bergkamp was awarded the PFA PLayers’ Player of the Year award and the FWA Footballer of the Year award.
