Antonio Conte wants Alvaro Morata, but the Chelsea board prefer Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea fans don’t often hope Antonio Conte fails, but in this instance they should back their board instead of their trusted manager. The Blues would be much better off signing Romelu Lukaku as opposed to Alvaro Morata this summer.

Reports from England claim that Conte is pushing the higher-ups at Stamford Bridge to bring in the Real Madrid striker. Ostensibly, that would take them out of the running for the Everton star. Lukaku might be the more expensive acquisition, but you get what you pay for.

That’s not a shot at Morata. The Spanish striker has world-class ability. There’s a significant chance that he could move to Chelsea and become a top Premier League striker. My point is that there isn’t a reason for the Blues to take that chance.

Signing Lukaku has almost no chance of failing. He’s already proven he can be one of the most prolific forwards in all of England. The talented Belgian is in contention for this year’s Golden Boot award. Lukaku is currently sitting on 21 goals in just 28 Premier League appearances.

The fact that he’s enjoying that type of success at Everton at the age of 23 is pretty amazing. Ronald Koeman is an excellent manager, but Lukaku isn’t surrounded by world-class attacking talent. With all due respect to Ross Barkley and company, they don’t hold a candle to the support Lukaku would receive at Chelsea.

In fairness to Conte, he does have a prior relationship with Morata. The fact that the two men worked together so successfully at Juventus is surely playing into his desire to reunite with him in England. There’s certainly a comfort zone for Conte in rekindling a relationship with one of his former stars.

It’s still an uncharacteristically short-sighted decision by the Italian manager. If Conte really wants to take Chelsea to the promised land of Champions League success, he’s going to need to purchase the best players possible this summer. It’s quite obvious that Lukaku is a better player than Morata at this stage.

Some Chelsea fans may think it’s unfair to question Antonio Conte about anything, but their board is right in their preference to sign Romelu Lukaku this summer. It’s the rare battle fans of the Blues should want their fantastic manager to lose. This summer will be quite an interesting time for strikers at Stamford Bridge.
