Eric Dier-8.5

Oh how we’ve all longed to see this version of Eric Dier return. During the first half he looked sluggish and sloppy as a central defender. Magically, once he was moved up the pitch to start the second half, his entire countenance changed.

It was clearly the best half of football we’ve seen from Dier since last season. Yes, the goal was well taken, but we’re talking about much more than that. Dier combined with Dembele to control the middle of the pitch with his physical play and quality distribution. It will be very interesting to see if he can follow up this performance with a string of excellent play.

Ben Davies-3.5

We’ve arrived at the point in the article where many people will disagree with me. I thought Davies’ performance against Burnley was entirely unacceptable. The Welshman is very lucky that Pochettino doesn’t have a reasonable alternative at the moment.

More from Playing for 90

Other than the one shot he had on target, I thought he was poor at almost every other moment of the match. He was slow, timid and sloppy with the ball. Burnley continued to target him with runners on the ball. Davies was bailed out time and time again by his teammates.

Hopefully it was just an off day. I’m not convinced he has enough quality to play a meaningful role for this club. Danny Rose needs to get healthy quickly.

Kieran Trippier-5

The best thing we can say about the former Burnley man is that he was Tottenham’s best fullback on the afternoon. In truth, Trippier really struggled to play well against his former club.

Trippier’s lack of top end athleticism means he has a relatively small margin of error. He has to do everything right on the ball to put in an adequate performance. He didn’t manage that today. He failed to do reach the final third during the first half and didn’t do much when he got there in the second. It was a forgettable return to Turf Moor for Trippier.
