Liverpool want to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

When Jurgen Klopp decides he likes a player he isn’t afraid to encourage the transfer committee at Liverpool to pay the necessary transfer fee. That’s exactly why Liverpool are the current favourites to sign Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

Officials at Arsenal originally thought their £35 million asking price might be enough to scare off potential suitors. That’s proved to be a foolish plan. Reports from England claim that Liverpool and Klopp aren’t discouraged in the slightest. Instead, the relatively modest price quote has only encouraged them to plan a summer raid on the Gunners.

Evidently Klopp thinks Oxlade-Chamberlain can play a full 90 minutes at Anfield. The 23-year-old winger has struggled to complete full matches during most of his time at Arsenal. In many ways, that small issue is emblematic of his entire experience in North London.

When you watch Oxlade-Chamberlain play it’s clear that he has serious talent. He’s an explosive athlete who can move the ball up and down the pitch. His end product might not be exactly what you’d want to see from a starting winger, but that’s something that should improve over time.

Perhaps more importantly, his strength and physicality allow him to be a true presence on both ends of the pitch. That’s a vital quality for a midfielder who can thrive under Klopp. In truth, it’s the one thing that the German gaffer is really missing in his current squad.

The likes of Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Gini Wijnaldum and Philippe Coutinho are great moving forward, but playing too many of them at once leaves Liverpool’s back four horribly exposed. Adding a player like Oxlade-Chamberlain to the mix could help Klopp strike a proper midfield balance. He’d be much better equipped to shift his midfield balance to deal with Premier League competition.

Arsenal fans are rightly concerned about Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil potentially leaving North London this summer, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s departure could damage them as well. Selling him to Liverpool could put the Gunners even further behind the Reds in the chase for a Premier League title.
