Real Madrid need to sell Karim Benzema instead of Alvaro Morata

For a very smart football man, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane seems determined to make a really stupid football decision. I can’t understand why Zidane is choosing to hang on to Karim Benzema instead of Alvaro Morata.

Sources from Spain claim that Morata has already informed teammates he’ll be leaving this summer. He’s grown tired of struggling for regular playing time under Zidane. As such, he’ll leave the club in search of a starting spot when the transfer window reopens.

At first glance, that seems like an unavoidable problem for a club of Real Madrid’s stature. After all, Zidane is blessed to have talented attackers like Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale in his starting XI. However, further consideration shows that selling Morata is a very short-sighted decision.

He and Benzema are the only classic strikers on the current roster. For the sake of this discussion you can forget about all of the other talented attackers on the roster. Zidane likes to play with one natural number nine, and those are the only two choices he has.

Assuming the club aren’t going to splash massive cash to purchase a new starter this summer, they should opt to keep the Spanish star over his French counterpart. Firstly, Morata happens to be five years younger than Benzema. You’d much rather have a 24-year-old for the next four or five seasons than a 29-year-old who isn’t exactly famous for staying in great shape. Morata career is on the ascendancy while Benzema’s game could start to decline at any moment.

More from Real Madrid

There’s also the small detail that Morata is a better player than Benzema already. He’s scored three more goals than Benzema this season despite significantly less playing time. Morata also boasts a slightly higher Whoscored.com player rating average. His mark of 7.13 is slightly higher than Benzema’s score of 7.02. Benzema is the better player by virtually every statistical measure.

Finally, Morata’s reputation off the pitch is also much cleaner than his French teammate’s. Benzema has been linked at various times to all sorts of unsavory characters by the media. Even if half of these reports are true, Real Madrid should elect to move on from the enigmatic striker.

Despite all of this logical evidence, it’s clear that Real Madrid are going to let Alvaro Morata leave this summer. That’s only going to cost them a mountain of cash in the transfer market sooner, rather than later. It will soon become apparent that Karim Benzema isn’t the right striker for Real Madrid to retain. They’ll wish they still had Morata to trot out on the pitch as soon as he scores for another club.
