4. Gini Wijnaldum

The Dutchman is becoming a fan favorite. His constant work rate, economical use of the ball and late runs into the box mean they have barely missed club captain Jordan Henderson. He plays the game with a huge smile on his face and clearly loves playing in the Liverpool red. Working hard for the shirt and enjoying every minute is a great way to endear yourself to the Kop.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp clearly trusts him to implement the pressing style of defense he prefers. The high energy he brings to the middle of the pitch is particularly helpful when the Reds look to transition quickly from defense to attack. Sadio Mane has been the leader at these quick switches but Wijnaldum has become vital in his absence.

His time at Newcastle was underwhelming. Many good games were followed by poor ones. The Geordies never found his best position. When he was signed in the summer for a large fee the Liverpool fan base was underwhelmed. A relegated midfielder who didn’t fit in at Newcastle is hardly the signings young boys and girls dream about. Yet Klopp knew he would be perfect in his system and Wijnaldum has repaid that faith.

In the last month he has been essential through Liverpool’s injuries and has contributed two assists. His teammates have been vocal of their appreciation of the Dutch midfielder and he has been instrumental in their recent good form.
