Centre-back: Cesar Azpilicueta
Given that Spurs and Chelsea are equal on clean-sheets this season it’s only fair to have a Spurs and a Chelsea defender on here.Cesar Azpilicueta has been fantastic as a their centre back in the Chelsea defence.
While he was originally a right back/ left back Azpilicueta has proven his versatilty as a great central defender on the right. It has proved to be an excellent decision from conte to convert the Spaniard into one.
I suspect that Conte never actually intended to play Azpilicueta there but in the second half of the 3-0 Arsenal defeat where Conte was just trying things out. It worked and from then on Azpilicueta has kept his place there.
Interestingly, the little Spaniard has made an average of 2.2 aerial duels won per game from his 32 appearances. That’s more than Toby Alderweireid who has several inches on him in height.
The 27-year-old has made 3 man of the match performances but in all honesty he’s been one of Chelsea’s best players in every game. He’s just so consistent.
He’s made 2.1 tackles, 2 interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game on average.
The right-central back has also chipped in offensively with 2 assists and an incredible average of 63.3 passes per game with 87.7% accuracy. He also makes 3.1 long balls per game.
Incredible passing stats for a central defender.
