Centre-back
With Sergio Ramos and Pepe in central defence during the past few seasons, the centre-back position has been one Real Madrid’s strengths within the squad. However, with the possibility of Pepe moving on this summer, Los Blancos will want to ensure that they continue to utilise quality in the middle of their back-line.
Pepe may be looking for a longer contract than Real are prepared to offer, and the Portuguese defender would undoubtedly find plenty of European suitors keen to bring him on. Madrid, on the other hand, may search elsewhere for the position.
Talents like Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus) and Thiago Silva (PSG) are great examples of what Florentino Perez may want to see from his club’s line-up in the approaching campaign.
Real Madrid also have two tremendous potential stars in their current team as well, with both Raphael Varane and Danilo possessing the capability of the spectacular when on the pitch. Ultimately, the options are there within the squad and within the global transfer market to give Madrid the upper hand when it comes to contract negotiations with Pepe.
With a need for quality in defence, Real Madrid certainly may feel that the centre-back position deserves a significant amount of financial attention in the summer transfer window.
