Manchester United may give Joe Hart a life line

Transfer between Manchester United and Manchester City aren’t exactly commonplace. The tension between the crosstown rivals makes doing business very difficult. Shockingly, Joe Hart may provide both sides with an opportunity to make a deal.

Reports from England claim that Hart would like to make the switch to United this summer. The English keeper has enjoyed a good year on loan for Torino, but the Serie A club can’t afford to keep him. Hart’s wages significantly limit the number of clubs that can afford to sign him.

Manchester United certainly have the financial might to acquire him. Of course, they’ll only be interested in bringing Hart in if they lose their current starter. Most expect David de Gea to finally secure his dream move to Real Madrid this summer. If that comes to pass, Jose Mourinho will need to find a new number one of his own.

It’s an unlikely turn of events, but Hart moving to United is at least a possibility. He’s a proven Premier League commodity who Mourinho could trust. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to learn that The Special One has more trust in Hart than Pep Guardiola does. The City boss clearly doesn’t think Hart has what it takes to be his number one option.

More from Manchester United

From the player’s perspective, the move would be based on two key factors. The first, and much more pedestrian, would be Hart’s desire to keep his family in place. Understandably, keeping them based in the Manchester area would be a very attractive option. United are really the only club that can help him accomplish that goal.

Secondly, and much more nefariously, Hart would like to stick it to Guardiola. No matter what he says, he has to harbor some ill will towards the City manager. Hart was good enough to win a Premier League title at Manchester City. Having a new manager come in and tell you that you aren’t good enough certainly didn’t sit well with Hart. He handled it with class, but he simply has to harbor ill will towards Guardiola.

Moving across town to United would give him an opportunity to show the City boss up on a weekly basis. For a player of Hart’s ego, that’s an enticing opportunity. A motivation like that is something that could also appeal strongly to Jose Mourinho’s own ethos.

Joe Hart moving to Manchester United isn’t this summer’s most likely transfer, but it would be the most interesting. It would add a great deal of spice to what’s already a heated crosstown rivalry.
