4. Jan Vertonghen is back

Toby Alderweireld deservedly got tons of plaudits for Tottenham’s defensive renaissance last season. This year, it’s been a different Belgian who’s enjoyed the superior campaign. Jan Vertonghen has quietly had his best season as a professional.

More from Playing for 90

Either he or the aforementioned Wanyama would earn today’s Man of the Match from me. The classy Belgian didn’t put a foot wrong in 90 minutes. If we’re honest, he was rather unlucky not to find his name on the score sheet. Petr Cech made a sparkling save to deny him from making it 3-0 Spurs in the second half.

Of course, anything Tottenham get from Vertonghen offensively is just icing on the cake. He makes his money keeping opponents away from Hugo Lloris. That’s what he did best against the Gunners. He was a huge reason for Spurs’ clean sheet.

Vertonghen’s resurgence allows Pochettino and company to head into the summer content with their central defensive partnership. They may look to add a third centre back, but the top pairing is set in stone for the next few seasons. Credit Vertonghen for raising his game to the level of Alderweireld.
