Liverpool are going to cut Chelsea a big check

Chelsea might be the last club in the Premier League who needs one of their peers to do them a financial favour. However in this case, the rich are about to get richer. Liverpool are set to grossly overpay the Blues in the summer transfer window.

Reports from England claim that Jurgen Klopp has decided that Cesc Fabregas should become one of the Reds’ top summer transfer targets. The supposed idea is that Fabregas’ experience could give the squad at Anfield a leg up as they participate in European football.

Despite his significantly reduced role at Stamford Bridge, Fabregas isn’t likely to move on the cheap. He’s already turned down a big money move to AC Milan because he’d prefer to keep his family in London. A move to Liverpool wouldn’t be quite so jarring, but it’s still going to take some money to convince Fabregas it’s a move worth making.

The Serie A giants were reportedly willing to offer Chelsea £30 million for the 29-year-old midfielder. Don’t expect Conte to accept anything less from his Premier League rivals. Selling him within England could push his transfer fee even higher.

If that’s not bad enough, Fabregas’ huge wage packet will make acquiring him even more onerous for Liverpool. It’s not as if Klopp’s club are afraid to pay significant wages, but Fabregas is rumoured to be making somewhere in excess of £150 thousand per week. That’s a ton of cash for a player who might not be a regular member of Klopp’s starting XI.

Aside from the financial considerations, I have serious questions about how Fabregas’ game is going to work under Klopp. The manic German manager wants players who run their socks off every match. That’s just not the way Fabregas plays. He wants to control the game from the middle of the pitch with his passing. He’s never been acclaimed for his work rate to win the ball back.

In the end, I expect cooler heads to prevail at Anfield. The combination of Fabregas’ cost and his awkward fit with the club should cause Klopp to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements. If the Spanish ace does move to Anfield, you can bet that Chelsea officials will be laughing all the way to the bank.
