Cristiano Ronaldo doesn’t want Paulo Dybala at Real Madrid

When it comes to roster moves at Real Madrid, nothing happens without Cristiano Ronaldo’s approval these days. If that holds true, Paulo Dybala won’t be a member of Los Blancos next season.

It’s not that Ronaldo has a particular issue with the Juventus starlet, he just prefers another striker to Dybala. Instead of chasing the Serie A ace, Ronaldo wants his club to bring one of his countryman to Spain. Ronaldo is encouraging club officials to make a decisive swoop for Porto striker Andre Silva.

Aside from having their home nation in common, Ronaldo and Silva also share an agent. Jorge Mendes happens to represent both stars. That coincidence could loom large for Zinedine Zidane’s squad this summer. Mendes doesn’t make negotiating easy for any club, but it might improve Real’s chances of bringing Silva into the fold.

The 21-year-old Portuguese striker has enjoyed a productive season for Porto. 16 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances are certainly  respectable totals. More impressively, Silva racked up four goals and two assists in his club’s eight Champions League appearances.

However, the gap between Portugal’s top flight and La Liga football is pretty vast. At the very least, Silva would need some time to adjust to the difference in quality between the two leagues. At worst, he might find himself overwhelmed with the difficult task of leading Real Madrid’s line on a weekly basis.

At least he’d have the support of Real Madrid’s biggest star. For all of the other luminaries on Zidane’s roster, Ronaldo still carries the most favour with the club’s fan base. That won’t go on forever, but it’s still the case this summer.

That’s why it shouldn’t surprise anyone if Real Madrid do ultimately swoop for Silva this summer. Placating their biggest star would provide the club some intangible benefits in the dressing room. That in and of itself isn’t a reason to make the move, but it will be a factor in the club’s thinking.

Paulo Dybala is certainly a more dynamic prospect than Andre Silva, but he also carries a massive price tag. The difference in price combined with Ronaldo’s preference might be enough to bring the Porto man to Spain this summer.
