Real Madrid want big money for James Rodriguez

Manchester United remain in the pole position to sign Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez, but Jose Mourinho won’t be receiving a discount. Los Blancos still are set to demand a huge premium for their Colombian midfielder.

Spanish sources insist that Zinedine Zidane’s club won’t accept selling the player for a loss. That means that United, Chelsea, or some other European giant, will need to stump at least £64 million to acquire him this summer.

Fortunately for United fans, that transfer sum shouldn’t discourage their club. Ed Woodward might be a little miffed at the price, but Mourinho will surely browbeat his transfer leader into meeting Real’s demands. United aren’t the sort of club that will let a few million pounds get in the way of signing a player they desperately need.

Much has been written about United’s need to purchase a new striker this summer, but they should be more concerned with their lack of a world-class number ten. I happen to believe that Marcus Rashford is more than capable of leading Mourinho’s line. The real question is whether or not the likes of Juan Mata could provide him the sort of service required to score lots of goals.

More from Real Madrid

Inserting James into the middle of his lineup would solve Mourinho’s problem. He may not be quite good enough to dominate Real Madrid’s attack, but Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale don’t suit up for United. He would arrive at Old Trafford as the club’s unquestioned starter at the number ten position.

Make no mistake about it, James would be under immense pressure to deliver big results immediately. He had the ability to blend into the scenery in Spain, but there will be nowhere to hide from him in England. Moving to Manchester United would be a career-defining move for the talented Colombian.

The odds still favour James Rodriguez moving to Manchester United this summer, but Real Madrid will make them pay for the privilege. Don’t be surprised to see the player’s price several times before he ultimately leaves Spain.
